One of the things that struck me was the "throw caution to the wind" attitude of the Aussies and South Africans, both in and out of the water. This made for some groundbreaking surfing on the north shore, but also caused very, very heavy vibes between them (especially Rabbit Bartholomew and Ian Cairns) and the locals. It was interesting to hear some of the main players of both sides give their recollections and perspectives of the conflict...how it began, escalated, and was somewhat resolved. I came away with even more respect for Eddie Aikau (and his dad, Pops) after hearing how he took the responsibility of being peacemaker...a real testament to his character and aloha, even at his young age when this occurred.<BR/><BR/>Some other aspects of the movie I found interesting:<BR/>1) I get teased now for wearing relatively short surf trunks, but guys back then (mid 70's) were wearing waaaay shorter trunks! Was I wearing those back then too?!!<BR/>2) Seeing those guys charging and ripping in heavy conditions on much less sophisticated boards and no leashes! What's my excuse?<BR/>3) How articulate, open, introspective, and sometimes emotional especially Shaun Tomson and Rabbit were during their present day interviews. They've matured into true statesmen of our sport.<BR/>4) How much some of the guys have aged, and how well some have aged since the 70's. Hope I'm in the latter category...hmmm, maybe shorter shorts and longer hair (while I still have some) would help me bring back some youthfulness...<BR/><BR/>Thanks for the invite to the premier Dave!
